Considerations for Building a Catalog
So what kinds of professional learning activities should I place in my catalog? I have lots of ideas that I would love to … um … "catalog-ize"!

Edivate content viewing! Is that "catalog-izable"?
Of course! But …
I would also like to step outside of Edivate and have in-person trainings for my educators. Can we "catalog-ize" such a thing?
Sure! But …
I can think of other things I would like to do! Is the "catalog-ification" of any professional learning activity possible?
Almost any activity can be built into an Edivate course and courses can be added to a catalog. The possibilities are endless. But …
But what? Why the "buts"?
I don’t think our variations of "catalog" are correct, or even legal! But let me explain the categories you can use to classify activities.
Plan a Catalog
Video Units
Video units enable your educators to view Edivate video content and apply what they learn through reflection and follow-up questions.
Course Units
Course units provide the in-depth training and collaboration that an Edivate course offers to educators.
Training Units
Face-to-face training units provide a way for your educators to attend instructional sessions and receive credit for professional learning that occurs in classroom type settings outside of Edivate.
I think I get it. I can use various forms of professional learning activities and adapt them to fit into these three categories.
Correct. Now let's begin building that sweet catalog!
Build a Catalog
Create a new catalog named Kuleana Academy Yearly Catalog.
- Click Admin Tools.
- Click Choose a page… and then Add/Edit Catalogs.
- Scroll down by clicking anywhere on the screen.
- Click Create Catalog.
- Type Kuleana Academy Yearly Catalog for the title.
- Click Save to save your new catalog.
- Very good. Your catalog is now ready to have units added.
Adding Units
My educators enjoy Edivate video content. Add a little bit of honey to it, and they’ll really get excited.
A catalog video unit will enable you to prescribe specific video content to your educators.
I know which videos I would like to use. Now what?
We place them in our catalog. Let me show you how.
Add a Video Unit
Add a new video unit titled Cyberbullying and This program will cover an overview … for the description. Add the Cyberbullying video to the Compliance Series video library in the Bullying folder with a credit value of 0.5.
- Click Add New Unit.
- Select Video as the unit type.
- Type Cyberbullying as the title.
- Type This program will cover an overview … as the description.
- Click Add Video to select a video from Edivate content.
- Open the Compliance Series folder and then the Bullying folder to add the Cyberbullying video.
- Enter 0.5 as the credit value.
- Click Save to add the unit to the catalog.
- Very good. Now you're ready to add more units to your catalog.
Course Units
Edivate offers some great courses, and I’ve thought of several I would like to create myself. You mentioned they can be made part of a catalog?
Of course. Courses are customized packages of learning activities that could include video content, specialized tasks, articles, discussion boards, or just about anything.
Does adding a course unit differ from adding a video unit?
Yes, there is one important difference. You have access to all Edivate Videos, but only access to courses that have been created at your site; in your case, courses that have been created at your district.
Add a Course Unit
Add a new course unit with Understanding Autism for the title and Gain a better understanding of how to... for the description. Add the Understanding Autism course with a credit value of 2.0.
- Click Add New Unit and select the unit type titled Edivate Course.
- Type Understanding Autism for the title.
- For the description, type Gain a better understanding of how to ….
- Click Add Course to choose the course from a list.
- Select the course named Understanding Autism and click Add Course.
- Type 2.0 for the credit value.
- Click Save to add the unit to your catalog.
- Very good. Now you can add course units to your catalog.
Training Units
We occasionally want our teachers to participate in face-to-face trainings from experts. Are training units difficult to add?
No, but be prepared to provide some of the training details. You will need the date and location, who is facilitating, and the number of seats available in the training.
Add a Training Unit
Add a new training unit with unlimited seating that will take place at the district office on March 3rd from 3:00 - 6:00 PM, facilitated by Penny Johnson from Kuleana Academy. Type PLC Training as the title and District administration will provide training... as the description.
- Click Add New Unit and select the unit type titled Training.
- Scroll down by clicking anywhere on the screen.
- Type PLC Training as the title.
- For the description, type District administration will provide training….
- Type District Office in the Location box.
- Click Add Facilitator to choose a faciliator.
- Select Kuleana Academy as the school.
- Add Penny Johnson as the facilitator.
- Add a credit value of 3
- Set the number of seats to -1 to indicate the training has unlimited seating.
- Modify the dates and times of your training session to take place on March 3 from 3:00 - 6:00 PM.
- Click Save to add the unit to your catalog.
- Excellent. Now you know how to add training units to the catalog.
