Catalogs

“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” Good and bad; maybe this is just the way it is.
You’re a literature teacher? I don’t remember that second sentence being in “A Tale of Two Cities” however.
No, I’m a Professional Development Coordinator. And those two lines describe my tale perfectly.
How so?
I have introduced Edivate to my school. I love it. They love it. We all love it.
That must be the good news. What’s the bad?
After a period of excitement, my educators’ use of Edivate has slowed a bit. How can I help?
Have you considered using honey?
Won't that get our computers sticky?
Let me explain.

What is a Catalog?

You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. This idiom illustrates a basic principle about all humans, including educators. Administrators who supervise professional learning may have a multitude of resources available to offer teachers. But sometimes professional learning activities in and of themselves can be a bit … well … vinegar-y. Adding a little bit of honey, that little extra incentive, can go a long way. The Catalog feature in My Portfolio can be professional learning honey for your educators.

As a director of professional learning in your district, you have many resources available to you to assist educators in their efforts to improve their teaching practices. However, sometimes busy teachers do not take advantage of such resources often enough. By rewarding teachers for their hard work with credit towards recertification, re-licensure, or other credentials, teachers may receive the extra motivation necessary to take advantage of professional learning resources.

Honey! I agree; the idea of graduation and credit will be attractive to my educators.
Most people like the idea that the work they are performing will lead to a credential of some kind. Using a Catalog can help with this.
That’s true. Some of my educators have asked why Edivate couldn’t be used towards certification and re-licensure.
It can. By building your catalog units to contain the professional learning activities you desire, and assigning credit to them, you pour honey all over your PD program.
And that’s a good thing?
Yes, that’s a good thing.
